Gibson Thunderbird Bass

Up for sale, a vintage Gibson Thunderbird bass.  Based on the serial number, 7###9###, this bass was manufactured in 1979.  Reportedly there were only 500 built and very few of those were produced in natural finish.  This bass features a mahogany body, rosewood fretboard, three-point adjustable bridge and 34" scale.

This bass is in fair overall condition.  This largest issue is a repair to the headstock - at some point the neck cracked at the headstock.  When the bass was repaired, a volute was added to help with stability.  The repair was done fairly well, but the crack can be felt at the back of the top of the neck.  Structurally, the neck and headstock feel sturdy and stable.

Cosmetically the bass looks good with some light dings and finish wear mostly on the back.  There is some buckle wear and light marks from normal handling and play but no other issues.  In addition, the neck looks straight.  The electronics work well and the bass has a great, clean sound.  The frets show moderate wear and the action is nice and low.  Lastly, the bass could use some new strings.

The bass looks to be almost all original - the most notable exception is the pickguard which looks to be from a Gibson Thunderbird '76 Bicentennial (with the red/blue/stars Thunderbird figure).  In addition, the bridge is missing one of the saddles and another saddle is non-original.  Also, a screw on one of the tuners is not original and there is another screw missing from the rear electronics cover and from another tuner.  Otherwise the hardware, knobs, wiring, tuners, etc. and everything else looks to be original.

Overall this is a classic bass which should continue to go up in value and popularity.  This listing includes the original Gibson hard-sided case which is in decent condition.  Nice examples of this guitar seem to be in the $4000-$5000 price range.
